Short Story Performance Task


Directions: Address the following questions in short answer format. As with any research activity, use the sources provided below to support the claim(s) you make in your response. Be specific when referring to sources in your response. You will have 45 minutes to address all three questions.

Source D: Ken Burns' 1+1=3

Essential Question #1:
What is the relationship between place and literature? Focus on Sources A and B for your response. Use details from these and any of the other sources to support your answer.

Essential Question #2:
In Source D, Ken Burns provides a formula for writing a good story: 1+1=3, or "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts." Focusing on this source, explain how the metaphor "1+1=3" is true in storytelling. Use details from Source D and at least one of the other sources to support your answer.

Essential Question #3:
Conflict is one of the essential elements of any story.  How do Sources C and E support this claim? Use details from these and any of the other sources to support your answer.
